Why I Stopped Using Mailchimp

When I first began writing emails and blogs some 14 years ago Mailchimp really took the scene by storm in terms of email marketing and syncing with the hottest blogging platforms of the time like blogger.

It was marketed as being user friendly and easy to learn and very cheap.

And over the years it has kind of, somewhat, maintained that. But it also kind of hasn't.

Thankfully it hasn't turned into the complete disaster that Paypal has turned in to but it also hasn't expanded without some severe faults as well.

So let's go through them.

While the basics of Mailchimp like creating an actually email are still fairly simple with their drag and drop platform they are also really niche in terms of the terminology and where to find things.

When Mailchimp overhauled their dashboard part of that process was renaming all the things that had previously been straightforward and kind of hiding them behind these "fancy" business like terms that for the complete beginner--and even seasoned user who was switching over--wasn't as intuitive as it used to be.

Their analytics system is...okay. It's not the best. It's not the worst. And they definitely could improve on them considering the amount of money they now charge for some of their plans.

Which brings me to...the cost.

Mailchimp does have a very limited free plan option which is only useful if you are a complete beginner trying to create a following. That being said if you want to use any of the more "advanced" services you are going to have to pay and if your platform expands enough you are going to have to pay a fairly hefty price for not a ton of benefit at the end of the day. (For more information on Mailchimps pricing policy you can go here).

In addition with so much competition out in the market of email marketing now Mailchimp doesn't stand out anymore. Yes it has it's years of reputation to back it up...but at this point that is kind of all it has to back it up. There are many other email marketing platforms that are out there that do all the things that Mailchimp does and more for a fraction of the cost--and do them way better.
