The Basics of Pendulum

When you are starting out in divination or witchcraft one of the first things that you will run across is the concept of the Pendulum.

The pendulum is a cord or chain that has some sort of stone or piece of jewelery or weight or charm--or really anything you want--at the end of it.

The premise is that you hold the tip of the chain and let the stone say still. You ask it for yes and no and once it's estabilished you then go about asking a yes or no question and wait for an answer from the pendulum holding your arm steady as to not influence it.

There are loads of pendulums on the market ranging from all sorts of stones to charms to wooden charms...whatever your heart desires you can find in the pendulum world.

It is also very easy to start so lets go through step by step the process in which you would begin using a pendulum.

First you want to go about finding a pendulum. If you are reading this and you don't have time or money to invest in a "real" pendulum you can take a necklace with a pendant on it or even a bracelet with a charm and use that. In some ways it may work better as it's already infused with your energy.

Either way you do want to clear your pendulum regularily. The reason for this is because the pendulum is one form of divination that is very heavily influenced by energy in it's environment and can easily taint any kind of answer you may receive as a result. And if you have purchased a pendulum you don't know how many people have picked it up before you so it's best to start with a clean slate.

Once your pendulum is cleared you want to know how it's going to work for you. This process is called an atunement and it's where you will hold your pendulum at the tip or drape it over your hand and hold it between your fingers--whichever you prefer-- and ask the pendulum to show you yes and to show you no. You want to make sure when doing this that you are as still as possible and that the pendulum is still between asking for a yes and a no answer. As you are doing this you should notice the pendulum start to sway to show you the answer.

For example if you are asking "Please show me yes" the pendulum may start to sway back and forth. You would stop it with your hand and say "Thank you. Now please show me no." and the pendulum may begin to go in a circle. Again you would stop it and thank it.

Now you are ready to ask a question.

I typically start with a question I already know the answer to just to make sure I have understood the attunement properly. So this may be like "Is my name Lavana?" and then the pendulum sways yes and you can even then ask a question you know the answer is absolutely no to such as "Is my name Robert?" and then the pendulum if attuned should sway no.

If you find that you are a receiving a yes when it should be a no or vice versa you may not have cleared the energy effectively or infused your energy into it effectively. If this is the case, stop, relax, clear it again, re-attune it and try again.

On ocassion you will pick up a pendulum that will just not work for you. This could be because the stone just doesn't match your energy in that moment or the charm subconsciously is associated with something different than what you were told or the material isn't a good conduit for your energy.

When that is the case unfortunately there is nothing else that you can do besides letting that one go, returning it if possible, and purchasing another one or using a different necklace, pendant or bracelet.
