Casting a Circle for the Beginner

Look, I'm not going to lie. I used to be one of those people that would say 'You don't need to cast a circle to do spellwork or important rituals. It's limiting your craft.'

I will admit when I'm wrong and I will say that--for the most part--I was wrong.

But not for the reasons that many people reading this are going to think.

So let's back up a bit and discuss why I believe casting a circle is important...especially*** in today's day.

If you haven't noticed...we are currently in the middle of a spiritual warfare. And there is this back and forth between good and evil in the spiritual and sometimes even physical sense of things. This also means that if you want rituals or spellwork to be efficient and have a lesser impact in rebounding on you or simply just not working casting a circle and putting up multiple layers of protection in todays day and age is essential and non-negotionable.

As much as we don't like to admit it any kind of outside energy can and will influence your ritual if you allow it. This includes family and friends and their energy which is why you are encouraged to cast a circle even within your own home.

That being said...here's why I don't* believe casting a circle is important.

I don't believe you need to cast a circle to connect ritualistically with a deity of your choosing.

I also don't believe you need to cast a circle to meditate for any reason. That to me seems to be taking it a bit too far but if it is something that helps you get into the groove of it then by all means go ahead.

I don't believe that every spell you do or minor rituals and offerings require a circle to be cast.

In fact, offerings absolutely don't require a circle to be cast under any circumstances and anyone who tells you otherwise is foolish.

I also don't believe you require tools of any sort in order to be able to cast a circle. Typically people who make this claim are trying to sell you something--usually a product of their own. In my mind that is wrong and it's a farce. Your finger is just as powerful as a wand, staff or athame.

If you are in an area of "untouched" nature...I don't believe you need to cast a circle for any reason.

That being said...if you are in an area that is nature but frequented by strangers on a constant basis than for protection reasons I do* believe that you need to cast a circle.

Overall you can see I'm quite flexible on the manner.

And whether you decide to incorporate circle casting fully, partially or not at all into your practice I do think that it can be something useful for you to have knowledge on and still encourage everyone to learn how to do it properly and effectively.
